As part of our launch program, it’s now time to help shine the spotlight of the great Americana, roots and alt country music artists that we have in New South Wales when we have dive deep into Sydney’s inner west for a great night of music at Leadbelly on 2nd March.
Let’s take a little sneak peek at who will be performing on the night:
Jason Walker & his band The Tender Mercies have a strong reputation in the Sydney live music scene for many years and Jason continues his legacy for writing beautiful country songs. In 2016, Jason Walker signed to Lost Highway records and released his new album “All Night Ghost Town”, produced by fellow label mate Shane Nicholson. The album has been met with critical and audience acclaim and showcases Jason’s respect for the craft of song writing and draws on his deep love of pure country music.
Fanny Lumsden is ‘a breath of fresh country air’ according to Rolling Stone Magazine and has been coined ‘Australia’s answer to Americana’ by Rhythms Magazine. With her own playful take on Australian Alt-Country and with a cracking band, The Thrillseekers in tow, Fanny has covered a lot of ground, selling out shows in everywhere from inner city bars, backyards and their self-produced Annual Country Halls Tour through regional New South Wales & Victoria. Hot on the heels of her first Golden Guitar win for Best New Talent in January 2017, Fanny continues to tour all over Australia playing her sensational debut album “Small Town Big Shot” and leaving audiences wanting more and more.
Sam Newton writes songs that dig deep into melancholy, devotion and flawed and fascinating characters. He has the uncanny ability to find a direct line into the central themes of his songs with a raw and poetic honesty. Since the release of his second album “Violet Road”, Sam continues to perform at bars, pubs, festivals around Australia and with each show, dives further into sweet country melodies and an even greater blending of styles – from Wilco to Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson to Paul Simon, the album is yet another step forward for Newton in the great art of song writing.
Better known as the voice and front man for legendary Sydney roots band The Flood, Kevin Bennett is a multi CMAA Golden Guitar winner, most recently taking home two awards in January 2017 for his collaboration with Felicity Urquhart and Lyn Bowtell on their self-titled trio album “Bennett, Bowtell & Urquhart”. With a soulful voice and virtuoso guitar skills KB writes relevant, contemporary Australian music containing elements of Blues, Rock and Country – telling stories of where he’s from and where he might be going. He sings his life.
Melody Moko is an Americana artist not afraid to push the limits of the genre, inspired by Brandi Carlile and Kathleen Edwards, she shakes off the doom and gloom and brings vibrancy to any stage she steps upon. Having toured both the USA and Australia, Melody Mokos debut album “The Wreckage” is highly anticipated as a release that will firmly make a mark on the music industry.
Bill Hunt is a vocalist, songwriter and musician from Melbourne, Australia who currently calls Sydney home. Bill’s music is as varied as has been his life to date. Having made significant inroads into the singer-songwriter scene in and around Sydney, Bill booked studio time and in February 2016 headed back to Melbourne to record his first album, “Upwey”, which was released in July 2016 and he continues to perform to a growing audience base, as once you hear the music of Bill Hunt, it will surely leave you longing to hear and see him perform again.
